Under the terms of the latest government GP contract all patients will be allocated a named accountable GP. This is solely an administrative task and does not prevent patients from booking appointments with any other doctors or nurses at the practice. Patients will be informed of their accountable GP at their next interaction with the practice. If a patient has a particular preference to a certain GP our best efforts will be made to accommodate their preference. Please Note: There is no need to telephone the practice for this information.
What has changed from 1st April 2015? The 2015 – 2016 GP contract in England now requires the named accountable GP to take responsibility for the co-ordination of all appropriate services and ensure they are delivered where required (based on the named GP’s clinical judgement) to each of their patients.
The role of the accountable GP will not:
Take on vicarious responsibility for the work of the other doctors or health professionals; take on 24-hour responsibility for the patient, or have to change their working hours: imply personal availability for GPs throughout the working week; be the only GP or clinician who will provide care to that patient.
